Provision of Security Control – The server must be capable to manage the network resources and security control. To enhance the security control, different users, trustees and groups should be built up to access the related data and services accordingly. The security control must also defend the external unauthorized hacker or invader via internet.
Support of Additional Services – The system is preferred to support a variety of the additional services, remote access, website, message service, and ftp services etc. Then different additional services may easily be plugged in to expand the functions and required services.
Ease of Maintenance – The network operating system is expected to be managed easily as well as the maintenance tasks. In case of the system problem such as error message or malfunction of some internal software, simple trouble shooting procedures are processed to fix the problems. There is no need to memorize a lot of commands and parameters. The daily maintenance tasks may be tackled easily by existing technical staff. The system is also supported by local vendor for faster and direct maintenance service.
Costing of the Network Operating System – Consider the necessary costing on the dependence and importance of network. i.e. How many workstations shall be connected to the network for data access? How many resources are needed for sharing? If the business nature is partially related to the network and internet connection, the budget of the expenditure of the network operating system cannot be too less. The total user licenses, server license and other license such as terminal service license must be considered for the budget.
